But, as we talk about in the supplementary information, we compared disparity for crurotarsans vs. ornithodirans as a whole.

As for the African theropods, I'm finished with them for the time being, I think. The specimens I described were those found by Paul Sereno, my undergraduate advisor. I've finished all of the ones I had to work on, but maybe there will be some more in the future...

SteveSteve Brusattehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00625261934625494952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7197765759213200792.post-42406035309092143352008-09-15T04:42:00.000+02:002008-09-15T04:42:00.000+02:00Yes, my critique was mainly centered on the figure...Yes, my critique was mainly centered on the figure you published, and did not focus on the entire data published (the phylogenetic analysis is very interesting: I'm adding some of the new characters present there to my theropod phylogeny).
Thank you for your comments and even compliments for your article.

What about your African theropod researches: are there some news?Andrea Cauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10855060597677361866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7197765759213200792.post-11928767778001719212008-09-15T04:17:00.000+02:002008-09-15T04:17:00.000+02:00Right, that's a reasonable critique.Except that we...Right, that's a reasonable critique.

Except that we did both analyses:
1) Crurotarsi vs. Dinosauria
2) Crurotarsi vs. Ornithodira

Both analyses gave the same result: crurotarsans had the much larger disparity (larger morphospace). It may look like ornithodirans had an equal morphospace just by looking at that figure, but it's actually not the case. The figure only shows the first two PCO axes, out of several axes that contribute data.

SteveSteve Brusattehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00625261934625494952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7197765759213200792.post-46780067436766730732008-09-15T00:22:00.000+02:002008-09-15T00:22:00.000+02:00Dear Steve,as I wrote in the conclusion of my post...Dear Steve,
as I wrote in the conclusion of my post, my critique was not on your methodology, nor on the conclusion that crurotarsal morphospace was greater than the ornithodiran (albeith, based only on the figure I cited, it seems not greater, but at least subequal). My critique was: why the autors compared a sub-clade of the direct sister-group of Crurotarsi and not the whole Ornithodira? I suggest that the answer is more psichological (concerning the extra-scientific meaning of dinosaurs, their "mythological meaning") than only methodological.

Nevertheless, i find your quantitative approach very interesting and useful, in particular when compared with the classical approach based on generalized and vague ecological concepts.Andrea Cauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10855060597677361866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7197765759213200792.post-44847817112753318512008-09-14T06:12:00.000+02:002008-09-14T06:12:00.000+02:00Ah, sorry, I misspoke. But, judging by your figures, you criticize our method because we compare Dinosauria and Crurotarsi, which are not sister taxa.

Two points to make:
1) Just because two things are sister taxa does not mean they are biologically comparable. Could we not compare dinosaurs and rhynchosaurs because they are not sister taxa?

2) More importantly, as outlined in the supplementary information, we actually did compare Crurotarsi with the entire clade Ornithodira. You quote some text from our supplementary information, but fail to include the entire section. We actually do compare sister taxa, and STILL FIND THAT CRUROTARSANS HAD A SIGNIFICANTLY LARGER MORPHOSPACE THAN CRUROTARSANS. The same goes with evolutionary rates. It doesn't matter if you look at all ornithodirans or only dinosaurs. The crurotarsans were doing more in terms of body plans, lifestyles, and diets.

I hope this clears up the problem.

Rimando quidi a Geomythology, a breve.

Complimenti per l'inesauribile vena (geo)mitologica.

LeoL.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09949414620786668632noreply@blogger.com
